Tips on Nominating an Article for the $5,000 PLOS Genetics Research Prize 2017

Nominations are open until Friday, June 16, 2017 at 11.59 PM Eastern Time. To assist you in nominating, we’ve gathered some helpful tips in this post. We look forward to your participation – review the program information and submit your nomination(s) today!

Last month, PLOS Genetics launched the journal’s third Research Prize to recognize authors for their work, with $5,000 available to the winners. With more than 600 research articles published in 2016, how do you decide which one(s) to nominate?

Know the criteria

All nominated articles will be judged by our Senior Editors based on the criteria of scientific excellence and community impact. The nomination form will ask you to provide a brief (~100 words) statement on why your nominated article should win. To help make this as easy as possible, we’ve put together a few questions to provide guidance – it isn’t necessary to respond to each in full:

  • How does the research provide us with novel knowledge and insight?
  • Does the research have important implications and applications?
  • How does the research further its field?
  • Why is the research question important?
  • Is the work of general interest/of interest to geneticists from a broad range of disciplines?
  • Are the methods and analyses robust?

Explore the research published during 2016

From research articles with most views, all time to most cited, all time, to most shared in social media – check out what’s been published in your specific field of research, using our advanced search tool.

Use Article-Level Metrics (ALMs) to inform your selection

PLOS provides ALMs in the top right-hand corner of every article – a green box displays its usage to give a snapshot of an article’s impact. See the screenshot below of the 2015 winner’s ALMs. For more insight and detailed data, click the ‘Metrics’ tab at the top of an article.

Find articles you edited or reviewed

Did you edit or review a paper which went on to be published in 2016? Maybe there was one that caught your attention for all the right reasons. All published articles you edited or reviewed are searchable, which could help you choose one that deserves the prize.

  • Reviewers: All papers and their decisions can be located under ‘Completed Assignments’ in your Editorial Manager account.
  • Editors: Articles you handled can be located using the ‘Advanced Search’ function on the journal’s website. Use the drop-down menu on the left to select Editor, type in your name, and press ‘Search’ to bring up the list of articles you have handled.

A huge thank you to everyone who has nominated articles to date. We look forward to more nominations and to recognizing the outstanding research that PLOS Genetics published last year.
